Use a long leash tied to a couch or other heavy furniture if your dog is unable to hold place without one. Do not leave the dog on place command while it’s home alone. Place command can travel all over your home, including the garage, fenced in area or even your bathroom. Place can be on any surface the size of your dog or slightly larger. A cot or a dog bed is fine. I use a raised cot for teaching place command because the distinguished raised surface makes it easier for the dog to learn the command. Place is calm. No bones or “busy-body” activity while on place. When I train dogs, they learn to be calm in all commands. Place can be held for hours. The more you have your dog practice the calmer mindset you are enforcing inside the house.
